is to see yourself in other women’s experiences
is to be multifaceted
is to be held to unspoken [double] standards
is to bring new perspective to the table
is to be tone policed for the comfort of those who can’t relate
is to hold both whimsy and intellect
is to find solace in friends who uphold your voice
to be a woman is to bear the image of God ||
Another week spent with my doctoral cohort in Houston,
I’m continually stretched and refined by this experience and overall feel incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do this.
The beauty that is Lanier library cannot be undersold, learning in a space like this was a dream for me.
My dissertation focus is on women and restoring their God given identities found in scripture through examining where Patriarchal readings and application of the text has diminished and objectified them.
Although I like to poke fun with cheeky shirts, the reality is that when women speak confidently, as a man would, instead of empathic listening, it is more often than not, met with resistance or gaslighting. This has been imbedded in our social construct and is rife within church contexts.
It is both a challenging and humbling topic to research and define but through it I am continually reminded that as far as we have come there is still so much further to go. There are so many who have done incredible work, who have gone before and led the charge, but there are still new paths to traverse and pioneering to be done. For the generations now and the generations to come.
and so I continue down my narrow lane, grateful to be accompanied by some incredible women through this journey, and holding on to the hope of being able to contribute a small piece to the conversation.
